Experiencing sadness, discomfort, guilt, or displeasure involves emotions that are entirely valid and normal.

Talk to the important people in your life about how you feel and what you would like; you don't need to say everything, but share enough so that others know how to help.

Allow yourself to feel, take time out, and cry if necessary. If possible, try also to laugh and even find moments of gratitude.

If you are helping to organize a gathering, don't overcomplicate things keep it simple. It is a great opportunity for all the guests to share the tasks.

Prioritize your energy; you do not need to attend every scheduled activity or stay for the entire duration. Recognize your limits and respect them.

Try not to compare yourself to how you were before the illness; doing so can lead to a great deal of guilt. Do not judge yourself—you did not choose what is happening to you. Instead, practice being understanding with yourself; this will help you find some peace and even allow you to recharge your energy.

It is important not to overlook the fact that the person with the illness is not the only one who may be struggling; family and friends also suffer because of the situation.

Sometimes emotions run so high that you simply don't know what to do. Communication is always paramount; talk openly about your needs, ask how you can support one another, and respect the decisions each person wishes to make.

And if opinions on how to celebrate the holidays differ, try to compromise and find common ground that allows you to stay united.

And if you aren't sure where to start offering support, I’d like to share a few tips:

Give yourself the chance to experience your own emotions and identify your needs.

You can ask the person with the illness about their expectations and whether there is a special way they would like the occasion to be celebrated. Take into account the type of food, as well as the timing and location of rest periods.

Create a contingency plan together in case someone does not feel well or comfortable during the activity. Knowing that the other person already knows what to do can provide relief and save you from stress in the moment.

Respect the person's wish if they do not want to be present for the entire activity. Express your willingness to help with whatever is needed, regardless of whether or not you agree with the person.

It is okay to feel sad, as well as to enjoy yourself and find moments of peace.

It is natural to make every effort to keep your spirits up and avoid affecting others; however, that is not always possible.

Try to strike a balance between listening to your needs and sharing with others. Support, communication, and knowing your own limits will be essential to achieving this.

And don't forget to give feelings space; identifying and feeling them will be fundamental to being able to regulate them.

There will be moments of pain and sadness, but also of peace, relief, and gratitude. It is not a matter of us adapting to the holidays, but rather of being able to adapt the celebration to our new needs.

Remember that the goal is to come together and love each other more.

Prepared by:

Licda.
